Arts and culture breaks

With its progressive, thriving arts scene and long association with creative types, Majorca is an engaging and must-visit cultural destination hotspot for anyone who is interested in art, music, film, architecture, literature or theatre.

Lights, camera, action!

With its dramatic coastline and beautiful villages, it’s no surprise that Majorca has been chosen as the perfect location to feature in films such as Cloud Atlas (2012), Stranger Within (2013) and The Hustle (2019), plus successful TV series and countless luxury car adverts.

The acclaimed Mallorca International Film Festival, which began in 2012, attracts big names as well as supporting rising talent. Or you can see award-winning films in their original language at any time of the year in one of Palma’s cinemas, such as the CineCiutat independent cinema.

Carved in stone

Majorca’s architecture paints a story of a long, rich and tempestuous history with the influence of many different cultures, as seen in Palma’s cobbled Roman streets, its magnificent gothic La Seu cathedral and the circular Castell de Bellver.

Travelling through the island’s town and villages, and along its winding roads, there are further clues to its people and how they lived, such as grand country estates (like the finca pública Galatzó in Calvià), teetering lookout towers and stone houses huddled together on narrow streets.

A writer’s haven

Well-known authors and poets across the centuries have lived in Majorca or been inspired after visits to the island, such as the English poet and novelist Robert Graves, whose old house in picturesque Deià is now a museum to his work.

Other writers with links to the island include local man Ramon Llull, Kingsley Amis, Agatha Christie, Evelyn Waugh, Roger McGough, Jules Verne and George Sands (when staying with her lover, composer Frédéric Chopin, Sands famously wrote the unflattering ‘A Winter in Majorca’).
